Alternative Methods to Treat Pain

During the initial History, Physical, and Evaluation patients are asked to describe their pain. This is very important. Is it achy, dull, sharp, burning, tingling, numb? Does it stay in one place or radiate (travel) to another part of the body? What makes it better? What makes it worse?

Anti depressant medications and Anti seizure medications are often prescribed for specific types of pain.

Topical Over the Counter products are sometimes recommended for muscle pain. Referred pain pattern diagrams are often used  by Dr. Hernandez Drozdowicz to identify specific muscles causing pain.

Kinesiotaping is sometimes applied over painful muscles. The tape is cotton with acrylic glue. It allows the muscles to relax, improves blood flow, decreases swelling, supports the muscles that are overworked or injured, and therefore decreases some of the pain.

Dry Needling is sometimes recommended and performed by Dr. Hernandez Drozdowicz for severe muscle spasms. Trigger Points (caused by muscles in acute or chronic spasm) are identified, prepped with alcohol and small needles are inserted into the muscles with an applicator. The applicator decreases the surface tension and therefore decreases the sensation of pain while the needles are inserted. Some patients are often surprised that a needle has already been placed. This needling helps the muscle spasm to start to relax so that patients can start stretching the muscles to maintain a more relaxed state for those muscles.

Dry needling can be effective for many acute and chronic pain issues including headaches, shoulder, low back pain, post surgical pain as well as other disorders.
